Stakes

  • The increased technical capability required to miniaturise devices along with the growing need for faster, more accessible and cost-effective solutions for precision analytical tools has led to the rapid growth of microfluidics in diverse sectors (e.g. pharmaceutical and biomedical industries).
  • However, due to this rapid growth, microfluidics and specifically the control of fluids in microfluidic devices still lacks universal solutions and standards

OBJECTIVES

  • The overall objective of this project is to focus on metrology research necessary to support standardisation for microfluidics used in the health and pharmaceutical industry. This project will develop protocols for measuring different quantities, interfaces, connectivity, modularity and sensor integration in microfluidic devices.

  • The protocols implemented in new transfer standards fabricated under this project and literature surveys will integrate the standards prepared by ISO/TC48/WG3. Nicolas Verplanck (CEA-Leti) is involved as convenor of ISO TC48/WG3 and will bridge the gap between the project and the ISO working group (requirements…).

IMPACT

  • The development of standards and test protocols for microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip systems can enable rapid testing and improve reliability of diagnostic products that are faster, scalable and more cost effective than current techniques but have comparable accuracy.

  • The new calibration guidelines and transfer standards developed in this project are of direct relevance to the industrial and other user communities as it will enable to test and improve their microfluidics devices or to develop new devices with increased accuracy and quality.
